Many people like to lower the heat at night while they sleep, but turning down the thermostat too far can be counterproductive. That’s because the heating system will have to work harder in the morning to warm the house.
Don’t expect to save money or energy with a space heater unless you switch off your home’s entire heating. If the entire system is still on, the space heater will consume extra energy to keep one area warm. And space heaters can be dangerous, too.
People insulate walls, doors and windows, but sometimes forget that an open fireplace lets cold air in and hot air out. Keep the fireplace closed unless you’re using it for a fire.
